Veneers are thin shells bonded to the front of your teeth to change their color, shape or size. Porcelain veneers typically cost $900 to $2,500 per tooth in the US. In Mexico, porcelain veneers are commonly quoted at $350 to $550 per tooth. Because most people get six to ten at once, the savings add up quickly. Here’s what to know before you go.

Types of veneers

Type What it is US price per tooth Mexico price per tooth
Porcelain (e.g. E.max) Lab-made ceramic shells; most natural-looking and durable $900–$2,500 $350–$550
Composite Resin shaped directly on the tooth; cheaper, stains and chips more easily $250–$1,500 $150–$300

Veneers vs. crowns

A veneer covers only the front of a tooth, so less of the tooth is removed. A crown covers the whole tooth and is better for teeth that are badly damaged or heavily filled. Be wary of any clinic that recommends crowns on healthy teeth simply to change their look.

The process, day by day

  1. Consultation and planning: photos, scans and a discussion of the shade and shape you want. Many clinics show a digital preview or a “mock-up” on your teeth.
  2. Preparation: a thin layer of enamel is removed from each tooth and impressions or scans are taken. You’ll wear temporaries.
  3. Bonding: after the lab makes your veneers, usually in a few days, they’re checked, adjusted and bonded in place.

Most people need about 5 to 7 days in Mexico, in one trip.

Getting a result you’ll be happy with

  • Ask how much tooth will be removed. Porcelain veneers need some enamel removal, which is permanent. Aggressive shaving to tiny pegs is a red flag.
  • Choose a natural shade. The brightest white can look artificial. Ask to see the shade next to your skin tone.
  • Insist on a try-in before final bonding, so you can approve the look.
  • Treat gum disease and decay first. Veneers on unhealthy teeth won’t last.

Where to go in Mexico for veneers

  • Tijuana: many cosmetic clinics with in-house labs, close to San Diego.
  • Cancún and Puerto Vallarta: popular for combining a smile makeover with a vacation.
  • Los Algodones: lowest prices, best for simpler cases.

Frequently asked questions

How long do porcelain veneers last?

Often 10 to 15 years or more with good care. Composite veneers usually need repair or replacement sooner.

How many veneers do I need?

Most people get the teeth that show when they smile, usually 6 to 10 on the upper jaw, sometimes the lower teeth too.

Can veneers be removed?

Porcelain veneers are permanent in the sense that the enamel removed doesn’t grow back. You’ll always need veneers or crowns on those teeth.
