A dental crown is a cap that covers a damaged, cracked or heavily filled tooth, or sits on top of a dental implant. In the US, crowns typically cost $800 to $2,500 per tooth before insurance. In Mexico, zirconia crowns are commonly priced around $400 to $600. Crowns are one of the simplest treatments to get done in Mexico, often in a single trip of under a week.

When you need a crown

  • A tooth is cracked, broken or badly worn.
  • A large filling has weakened the tooth.
  • After a root canal, especially on back teeth.
  • To finish a dental implant.

If you mainly want to change how healthy front teeth look, veneers remove less tooth.

The process

  1. Exam and X-rays to check the tooth and roots. If you need a root canal, it’s usually done first.
  2. Preparation: the tooth is shaped and scanned, and you wear a temporary crown.
  3. Fitting: the lab makes the crown, often within 2 to 5 days at clinics with in-house labs, then it’s checked and cemented.

Some clinics make crowns the same day with in-office milling machines.

Can I get several crowns in one trip?

Yes. Most people getting several crowns need 4 to 7 days in Mexico.
